WAPS reconfiguring elementary schools

By Jason Melillo Dec 20, 2024 | 11:14 AM

(KWNO)-Winona Area Public Schools is reconfiguring its elementary schools. The school board made the decision at a meeting on Thursday. At the start of the 2025-2026 school year, all kindergarten students will attend Goodview Elementary School, including students in the Rios Spanish Dual Language immersion program. Students in grades 1-4 will be split between Jefferson Elementary and Washington-Kosciusko Elementary. The Goodview attendance area will become part of Jefferson’s attendance area. There will no changes to Winona Middle School, Winona Senior High School or the Winona Area Learning Center.

In a joint statement, WAPS Superintendent Brad Berzinski and School Board Chair Nancy Denzer said the reconfiguration is a compromise and not perfect but “balances the need to address issues of equity and efficiency” in the elementary schools and “allows the district to allocate our limited financial resources” to provide “a better value to our local taxpayers.”
