Last week, Winona experienced a magical visit that warmed hearts despite the cold weather. The 2024 CPKC Holiday Train rolled into our little river town, bringing with it a dazzling display of lights, music, and holiday cheer—all for an incredible cause.
The CPKC Holiday Train, an annual tradition since 1999, tours across Canada and the U.S. every holiday season, spreading joy while raising funds and awareness for local food banks. This year, the train’s journey runs from November 21 through December 20, stopping in towns big and small. Winona was lucky enough to be one of those stops.
On a chilly Tuesday afternoon, families, friends, and neighbors bundled up and gathered near the tracks. Professional musicians Tiera Kennedy and The Lone Bellow took to the train’s built-in stage to deliver a free concert packed with holiday classics and crowd favorites. Their energy was contagious, and the sound of music mixed with laughter created a heartwarming atmosphere.
In addition to spreading holiday spirit, the Holiday Train’s mission is to support local food banks. CPKC made a generous donation to Winona’s food bank, and attendees were encouraged to bring monetary or heart-healthy food donations. By the end of the evening, the event had not only lifted spirits but also helped stock shelves for those in need during the holiday season.
Since its first trek, the CPKC Holiday Train has raised more than $24.3 million and collected approximately 5 million pounds of food for community food banks across North America. It’s incredible to think that our little town contributed to such a meaningful legacy.
For those who attended, the event wasn’t just about the dazzling lights or the festive tunes. It was about community—coming together to share in the magic of the season and to support our neighbors in need. If you missed it this year, be sure to mark your calendar for next season. The Holiday Train’s visit is a reminder of the power of generosity and togetherness, wrapped up in a joyful holiday package.
