(KWNO)-A Fountain City man allegedly left his wife’s body in the bathroom for six weeks after she died. A Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office deputy found the corpse while attempting to serve papers at the residence on Court Lane in Fountain City. The victim’s husband, 69-year-old Arthur McMullin, told the deputy his wife “may have died from a heart attack and he did not want to deal with the situation,” according to the criminal complaint. The woman’s body was so badly decomposed she could not be immediately identified.

The criminal complaint also states conditions of the house stunk of animal urine and feces and conditions were “horrendous and neglected.” More than 10 dogs and at least 30 cats were living in the home. The Trempealeau County Humane Association and Tails of Hope were called to the scene to help remove the animals from the house. Investigators also found two animal carcasses or skeletal remains inside the home.

McMullin further told investigators he didn’t report his wife’s death because he was afraid authorities would “take away his kids.” McMullin was apparently referring to his animals. McMullin is charged with one count of hiding a corpse and several counts of mistreatment of animals.
