(KWMN)-The Winona Senior High football team put on a romping of the Austin Packers last night, winning 43-6 to break a five-game skid.

Deion Prolo rushed for two touchdowns in the win, only need to throw one single pass all game long in the three quarters of play that he got. Jaden Blanck found the endzone once as well, while the defense forced four first half turnovers, including two pick sixes.

It was the best game the Winhawks have played all season, the most complete. It does come against an Austin team that has been dismantled by injuries, losing 11 starters throughout the season, which is a big reason as to why the Packers are 0-7 now.

Still, it’s important to see the ball go through the hoop, if you will. Last season the Winhawks had a similar start to the year, where they struggled against teams like Byron and Kasson-Mantorville. Yet they turned it around late in the year, winning three straight games to enter sections and then leading Byron in the final minutes in the semifinal. They hope to do that again this season. Ensuring they play their best football come playoffs.

“Absolutely [it feels good to get a win],” Head coach John Cassellius said after the game, “I think we just got to keep telling them we got to keep working on us. Keep moving in the right direction…It’s the next opponent, and we want to have as much momentum as we can heading into the playoffs.”

Most of the reserves got action in this game as the Winhawks built a 43-0 lead in the first half. Deion Prolo, Jaden Blanck and others like Patrick Curtin and Aiden Nation sat out for the majority of the second half. It’s great to see the less experienced get snaps, get a look into the future of Winhawk football.

“You know they practice all week long they run scout team…It’s always great to get them out there with their peers and their fans.,” Cassellius said of the reserves.

The Winhawks will look to make it two straight wins next Wednesday night as they close their regular season out from Paul Giel Field, taking on Rochester Century.

As for the Rushford-Peterson Trojans. They enter a matchup tonight at 3-3, playing host to the 4-2 Lewiston-Altura Cardinals. Our coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. only on the Winona Sports Network, streaming live online right here at winonaradio.com and on the Winona Radio App.
