(KWMN)-A 1-5 start wasn’t something that most in the Winhawk football program envisioned for the 2024 season, but that’s the reality.
After an impressive opening week win over Simley High, the Winhawk’s have struggled to get out of their own way and have felt the effects of a very thin roster.
The Winhawks have had a tough schedule since Simley. Facing two top ten ranked teams in the class in Byron and Kasson Mantorville, as well as a regular in the WIAA State tournament in Mondovi. Their other two losses came from St. Croix Lutheran and Faribault. They lost those two games by a combined score of 14 points. It feels as though their close, but they have yet to make the jump to being a force in the section.
Still, regardless of that fact, and their record, it doesn’t all too much matter if they can turn their fortune the other way and get hot for playoffs.
Last season the Winhawks saw a similar start, unable to find their first win of the season until week six. Almost exactly a year ago to the day.
They strung together three straight wins to end their season over Faribault, Austin and Rochester Century where they went on to face Byron in the section semifinal. They were playing some of their best football of the season when playoffs rolled around, and they took Byron, who made the state tournament, to the wire. Losing in the final moments of that game to end their season.
With as much talent as this roster has, regardless of their depth issues that Head Coach John Cassellius often talks about, there is plenty opportunity for this team to figure it out before seasons end. It has to start somewhere, ideally, tonight against Austin.
