Warrior Football Looks for First Win of Season Saturday Night in St. Paul After Disappointing Opener; Brian Bergstrom Chats with Winona Sports Network

(KWMN)- The Winona State Warrior Football team dropped their season opener last Thursday Night to Saginaw Valley State, 38-14.

Similar to one season ago, the Warriors got off to a slow start and were bullied by the Cardinals front in route to a deficit they couldn’t overcome. There were moments in this one. After a disaster start where Saginaw jumped out to a 14-0 lead thanks to a big play and a lost fumble by Winona State’s special teams, the Warriors settled in.

They brought the deficit back to three, scouring their way to a 17-14 scoreline. The success stopped there, however, and neither the defense nor the offense was able to keep up with Saginaw.

Cole Stenstrom, starting the opener for the Warriors for the second straight season, showed flashes, but ultimately wasn’t as good as he needed to be. Stenstrom finished 20/38 through the air, throwing for 295 yards and a score, but two costly interceptions aided in the outcome of the game.

The run-game for the Warriors was there at times, but missed the mark on more occasions than the team could afford. On the ground, the Warriors still had 126 yards and a touchdown from RS junior Cair’ron Hendred.

Winona State will have to bounce back over Concordia St. Paul this Saturday night on the road. Kickoff is slated in their week two matchup for 6:30 p.m.

Head Coach for the Warrior football team, Brian Bergstrom, joined Upon Further Review to discuss the week one loss, and how the team gets their first win in week two.
