By Jake Litman Jun 24, 2024 | 10:13 AM

(KWMN)-Originally scheduled to take place last Monday, weather forced the State Baseball championship games to be moved to the weekend, eventually, each class was able to get their game in from Target Field.

At this year’s title games, there wasn’t a single one-seed that made the championship game.

Class A:

Springfield 5-1 Parkers Prairie

-In their first trip to the State tournament since 2021, Springfield captured just their second ever title in program history, with their first one coming back in 2016. Fittingly enough, this was a rematch of that 2016 title game, with Springfield beating Parkers Prairie then as well. For Parkers Prairie, this was their second runner up performance at state in program History, having won it once in 2017.

Class AA:

Rockford 6-0 Foley

-In their first ever trip to the state tournament, Rockford walked away champions, after they shutout Foley. Rockford wins their first ever state title in their first try. Foley reached the State tournament for the third time since 2019, but this season was their best finish as runners-up.

Class AAA:

Totino-Grace 2-1 Mahtomedi

-Known for being a perennial powerhouse in the game of basketball, Totino-Grace went to just their third state baseball tournament in program history. With the win, they claim their first ever state title for baseball in their first trip to state since 2012. Mahtomedi is no stranger to the state tournament. This year was their ninth trip to state since 2014, as they’ve managed to win the whole things twice, once in 2018 and again in 2021. They finish runner up for the second consecutive season, and their third time since 2014.

Class AAAA:

East Ridge 3-2 Mounds View

-East Ridge was the only school to repeat this season as they complete back-to-back titles after their win vs. Mounds View. It’s their third title in program history, all of which coming since 2019 when they won their first. They’ve reached the state tournament three times since then, winning every time they get to Target Field. As for Mounds View, their Cinderella-ish run was stopped in the final game. They upset top seed and undefeated Wayzata in the semifinal but couldn’t come away victorious vs. East Ridge. Mounds View won back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014 and have reached the state tournament five times since but have yet to hoist the trophy since that win in 2014.

Mr. Baseball Award:

Riley Leatherman, SS/P.

-The Wayzata standout was named Mr. Baseball of Minnesota after leading his team to a stellar undefeated regular season, and third-place finish at the state tournament. Leatherman will be taking his talents to the illustrious University of North Carolina-Chappel Hill to play ball at the next level.

Ms. Softball Award

Cece Hanson, OF

-The stellar offensive play from Cece Hanson netted her the Ms. Softball award for Minnesota, as well as a third-place finish at the state tournament. Hanson caps off an impressive career for Rosemount, winning three state titles from 2021-2023. Hanson becomes the second straight Rosemount player to win the award after her former teammate, Jessa Snippes, won last season. Hanson will be taking her talents to South Dakota State University next season.
