(KWMN)- The Winona Senior High Softball team will embark on their fourth straight state tournament tomorrow at Caswell Park in Mankato, Minn.
Winona finished the year at 19-4, and although not as easy as it looked, rolled through the section 1AAA tournament. They reached their fourth straight state tournament with another section championship. The first time in program history they’ve been to four in a row. In 2021 and 2022, Winona finished as runner-up, with last year being a bit of a surprise as they fell in the opening round. Winona finished the regular season ranked top-five in the class, and with their section run, earned the #2 seed in the AAA bracket.
They’ll face Simley high in their first matchup at 12:30 p.m. Simley finished the year at a modest 16-7 but caught fire at the right time. They went undefeated in the 3AAA tournament while beating a top-ten ranked Academy of Holy Angels team twice in the process. Their record doesn’t show elite, but they have elite talent. They’re still being doubted in the State bracket, as they were one of three unranked teams in the field of eight.
The #1 seed is the top ranked team in AAA in Cretin-Durham Hall, who finished the year at 18-6.
Head Coach for the Winahwk Softball team, Mitch Grossell, joined the Winona Sports Network ahead of the start of the state tournament to discuss the regular season, section tournament, and the state tournament to come. Listen to that conversation below.
Be sure to download the Winona Radio App ahead of tomorrow afternoon’s matchup and turn on notifications. Jake Litman will be on-site providing inning by inning updates and reporting from Caswell Park. You can also follow along right here on winonaradio.com.
