(KWNO)-The Winona County Sheriff’s Office is warning people of an ongoing scam. According to a spokesperson three people have been targeted. The scammers are calling people and saying there is a warrant out for their arrest and then asking for personal information and payment in gift cards. A woman from Stockton who was allegedly scammed yesterday was told a warrant was issued for her arrest because she failed to report for jury duty. The scammers then texted her what the spokesperson said appeared to be a summons. The woman said she panicked and bought more than $1000 in gift cards and gave the card numbers to the scammers. In a Facebook post the Winona County Sheriff’s Office stated they do sometimes call people when they have a warrant “but NEVER ask for personal information and do NOT accept gift cards to pay warrants” and “the only way to clear your warrant is to go to jail and wait for court or pay your bail.”
