(KWNO)-Southern Minnesota will have a new area code soon. 924 will join the existing 507 area code. Nothing will change for existing customers but new customers or people requesting additional lines may be assigned the 924-area code.
As of January 30, local calls in the 507-area code can be made using either 7 or 10 digits. Starting July 30, all local calls within the 507-area code region will require using 10 digits (area code + 7-digit telephone number), otherwise calls will not go through. On August 30, new telephone lines or services could be assigned the 924-area code.
The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission says many systems operate on 10-digit dialing by default but some older equipment like life-safety systems and security alarm systems may still use 7 digits. The PUC urges people to contact medical alert or security providers to see if they need to upgrade their equipment. Any upgrades have to be done between January 30 and July 30.
