Main Street intersection will likely get stop sign

(KWNO)-The city of Winona is moving toward installing a stop sign on Mill Street where it intersects with Main Street. The intersection is currently uncontrolled, a designation meaning an intersection has no traffic lights, road markings or signs that are used to indicate the right of way. Director of Public Works Brian DeFrang said the intersection is an anomaly because most of the intersections on Main are controlled and a stop sign makes sense because Main Street is the main north/south artery in that area.

The intersection also has a sight distance of 60-65 feet, well below the suggested 140 feet for vehicles traveling in a 30-mph zone, according to the city. Safe sight distance ensures cars have adequate time to slow down or stop to avoid collisions. The city council will discuss the ordinance further at its next meeting.
