Deer with CWD found in Trempealeau Cty.

By Jason Melillo Nov 2, 2023 | 11:03 AM

(KWNO)-The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is confirming a deer in Trempealeau County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease. The deer was harvested in the town of Hale. Trempealeau and Jackson counties will renew a ban on baiting and feeding. The DNR says baiting and feeding “encourages (deer) to congregate unnaturally around a shared food source where infected deer can spread CWD.”

Wisconsin state law requires a three-year baiting and feeding ban in counties where CWD is detected and a two-year ban in adjoining counties within 10 miles of a positive case. The DNR is asking hunters in Trempealeau, Jackson and Eau Claire counties to have their deer tested for CWD and properly dispose of deer carcasses. CWD is a fatal and infectious nervous system disease that affects deer, moose, elk, reindeer and caribou.
