Burglar to police: ‘You’re going to have to kill me to get me out’

(KWNO)-A Winona man is under for arrest for breaking into a house and then attacking police officers.

Police were alerted to the break-in by a man who lives at the residence but wasn’t home at the time. The man, who lives at the house with his mother, got an alert from his ring doorbell camera. The man told police he saw Robert Cerney break a window at the home in the 650 block of East Seventh Street and go into the house. The man’s mother was home at the time and he told police he heard her screaming. The woman had a past relationship with Cerney, according to a police spokesperson.

Officers on the scene got the woman out of the house unharmed and left Cerney there after he said, “You’re going to have to kill me to get me out.” A short time later police found Cerney on the street and attempted to arrest him. Cerney charged at officers punching one in the face. Cerney was tased several times but continued to struggle leading officers to tackle him to the ground. Cerney was then handcuffed and taken to jail. He’s charged with several crimes including assaulting a police officer and burglary. The officers suffered minor injuries.
