(KWNO)-Walking and biking to school used to be the norm for many kids but times have changed. Most kids now ride the bus or get dropped off by caregivers.

But Wednesday was Walk and Bike to School Day in Minnesota. It’s part of an effort to promote physical activity and teach kids about walking and biking safety. MnDOT’s Joseph Palmersheim says there’s a new law requiring schools to educate students about how be safe as pedestrians or bicyclists.

“Students learn how to cross roads by using the left-right-left traffic scanning method. They learn about bicycle safety and bicycle safety laws. They learn the use of headgear,” says Palmershiem.

Families who live several miles away from their school building were able to bring their children a drop-off location so they could walk or bike to school with a volunteer.
