(KWMN)- The Winona Senior High football team fell in a road matchup with Kasson-Mantorville last Friday night, 42-7.

The Winhawks were shorthanded, with usual starting quarterback Deion Prolo out with an injury. Aiden Falls, senior wideout, played in relief of Prolo. Falls had split time at quarterback last season before Prolo took over fulltime duties late in the year.

The offense found success early, driving the ball down the field on their first possession before Falls coughed up the football and Kasson recovered the fumble. Falls returned the favor, however, and intercepted the Komets to get the ball right back. On their second drive, the Winhawks found success again, moving the football up the field, but penalties set the offense back, and stalled the drive. From there, the floodgates opened for Kasson.

After Kasson opened up the scoring late in the first quarter, taking a 7-0 lead, the ensuing kickoff return was fumbled by Jaden Blanck, and recovered by Kasson. They scored again, to make it a 14-0 game. The Winhawks following offensive possession yielded a punt, and Kasson answered with another touchdown. The Komets made it a 21-0 ballgame in the blink of an eye, and the Winhawks never recovered.

Aiden Falls finished 6/13 with 59 yards through the air and rushed for 56 yards on 11 attempts. Jaden Blanck was next in rushing, with 23 yards, while Aiden Nation was the only Winhawk to find the endzone.

Kasson was yet another opponent the Winhawks faced that are receiving votes inside the top 10 for 4A. Luckily, the gauntlet of top opponents in the class is over, and the Winhawks will close out the regular season with lighter tests, albeit still admirable. This is an opportunity for the Winhawks to show their improvement after facing the top of the class. The improvement is certainly there, and it feels like this team is close to hitting their stride.

Deion Prolo should return Friday night when they face Faribault from Paul Giel Field in Winona. Our coverage will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the Ballin’ in the Bluffs pre-game show, followed by kickoff at 7:00 p.m. only on Real Country AM 1380 FM 101.5.

Head Coach for the Winhawks, John Cassellius, joined the WSN to discuss the loss, and what’s ahead.
