Rushford-Peterson Battle to Close Loss vs. #3 Fillmore Central, Eyes Set on First Win Tonight vs. Hayfield; Head Coach Davin Thompson Joins the WSN Ahead of the Matchup

(KWMN)- The Rushford-Peterson Trojans fell to 0-4 last Friday night in a 12-6 loss vs. #3 Fillmore Central.

In a soaking wet, typhoon-esque night, the Trojans battled with the third ranked team in single A. Both teams combined for close to 10 turnovers, most of which due to the weather, and it was the Falcons that ended the night on top. The Trojans made it close, though, furthering the evidence that the team is improving.

Quarterback Caden Johnson found most of his success on the ground, highlighted by a 26-yard option run that set up the Trojans only touchdown. The passing attack was absent, however, and to no fault of his own. Head Coach Davin Thompson took ownership of the blame on the interceptions, saying that they should’ve kept the ball on the ground for the most part, but were trying to make something happen near the end of the game.

The Trojans switched up their backfield a bit. Instead of the Wing-T formation (they still ran this a couple of times), they switched back to their old style, having Johnson in the shotgun, surrounded by Jonah Bunke and Titan Tekautz on each side. Which led to the read option being an effective play for this offense. Something we can expect to happen more often.

It was the fight, the urgency, and the attitude that resonated with Thompson more than anything. Regardless of the weather, regardless of facing one of the top teams in the class, the Trojans played with aggression and energy to make it a close game. Thompson specifically pointed to the defense’s energy, something he had been waiting for all season long. It was noticeable in the press box as well, and it was one of the large reasons that defensive unit made so many plays.

Of course, the result still isn’t there. The Trojans are hoping that result comes tonight, as they host the Hayfield Vikings from Rushford at 7:00 p.m. Our Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. only on the Winona Sports Network and streaming online at winonaradio.com.

Both teams come into the matchup at 0-4, and both teams desperate for a win.

Head Coach Davin Thompson joined the WSN to discuss last week’s losing effort and give a look into tonight’s matchup.
