(KWNO)-An Independence, WI man is charged with negligent vehicular homicide in the death of a Trempealeau woman. Gavin Becker crossed the center line of Highway 53 last March and crashed into a car driven by 64-year-old Jeannie Furlin of Trempealeau. Furlin died from her injuries. A one-year-old passenger in Furlin’s car survived.
Becker told law enforcement his steering wheel locked up and he was trying to loosen it when the crash happened. But an investigation didn’t find any mechanical issues with Becker’s vehicle and he later admitted to being on his phone at the time of the crash.
The negligent homicide charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison. Becker is being held on a $7500 bond.
