Rushford-Peterson Drops to 0-2, But Improvement is Clear. Head Coach, Davin Thompson, Discusses How to Take the Next Step

(KWMN)- The Rushford-Peterson Trojan football team fell in their week two matchup against Bethlehem Academy last Friday night, 22-14.

The Trojans held a halftime lead of 14-8, but costly mistakes allowed BA to take the lead and never give it back. The Trojans fumbled the football seven total times in the loss, albeit only losing possession twice. Even so, fumbling halts momentum, and for an inexperienced team, maybe wrecked the confidence.

Regardless of the outcome, there was marked improvement from the Trojan side. They moved the ball much better than week one, in spite of the struggles to hang onto the football. The defense was able to hold a high-flying offense to only 22 points, while forcing two interceptions and the Trojans had a chance to tie the game late.

Caden Johnson looked abundantly more comfortable under center. Johnson was 7/12 through the air with 114 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 36 yards on the ground off of 12 carries. Jonah Bunke, Jaxon Meldahl and Titan Tekautz provided good support out of the backfield, combining for 94 yards on 20 attempts.

There is still plenty of work to do, head coach Davin Thompson will be the first to say. What’s important is that there is visible improvement, and if the Trojans can continue to trend in the right direction, they’ll eventually get the results they’re looking for.

The Trojans have their work cut out for them this coming Friday, as they’ll travel to the 8th ranked school in 1A in the Goodhue Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on the Winona Sports Network.

Head coach for the Trojans, Davin Thompson, joined the Winona Sports Network to discuss his team’s improvements, and how to keep getting better.
