(KWNO)-A forthcoming construction project in Winona will resurface Highway 43 and make other improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists. The project, which is scheduled for 2028, will start at the roundabout at Mankato Avenue and Sarnia Street and continue west on Sarnia to Main Steet and then north to 4th Street. Along the route some traffic lights might be removed and replaced with stop signs.
The project could also include roundabouts on Main Street but that’s not “set in stone,” according MnDOT spokesperson Mike Dougherty.
“One of the proposals is a mini roundabout or compact roundabout (at Sarnia and Main Street) and that’s not a full roundabout like on Mankato where you can’t go over the middle, it’s more like the one at Gilmore and what that does is it’s in a compact space and has a traversable dome so trucks and larger turning radius vehicles can go over the top but it’s just enough of a rise so that cars can stay in their traffic lane,” says Dougherty.
Closer to downtown there’s a proposal for a roundabout at Broadway and a compact roundabout at 4th Street. Dougherty says MnDOT will likely hold a public hearing this fall to discuss the project.
