(KWNO)-The U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Thursday it’s unconstitutional to use race as a criterion for college admission. Minnesota Higher Education Commissioner Dennis Olson says the Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action won’t end the state’s “commitment to supporting students coming from historically excluded populations.” The high court’s decision upends legal precedent dating back to the 1960s. But Commissioner Olson saying this about the State of Minnesota’s stance: “We know those gaps exist and that’s why the state continues to focus and provide targeted financial aid programs and resources.”
The People of Color and Indigenous Caucus in the Minnesota Senate says the U-S Supreme Court decision upending affirmative action “demonstrates just how deeply white supremacy permeates the halls of power in the United States.”
“By undoing affirmative action, we ignore the fact that we have legally discriminated against people of color for centuries,” said Senator Erin Maye Quade.
First District Republican Congressman Brad Finstad, whose district includes the greater Winona area, applauded the ruling, saying college admissions should never be based on race but rather on a student’s merits. Finstad adds, “it is unacceptable to deprive qualified students of educational opportunities because they don’t fit a certain demographic.”
