(KWNO)-A mistrial has been declared in the triple homicide trial of Nya Thao. Jurors deliberated for about 10 hours on Tuesday before telling La Crosse County Judge Elliott Levine they were deadlocked.

35-year-old Thao and 45-year-old Khamthaneth Rattanasack were charged with first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of three people last summer outside Romskog Quarry near West Salem. Rattanasack testified Thao was the shooter and murdered the victims over a $600 debt. Attorneys say Rattanasack lied several times under oath.

Thao smiled, hugged his attorneys and gave a thumbs up to someone in the gallery after the judge announced the jury was deadlocked. Thao is still in custody pending a bond hearing next week. Thao and Rattanasack could be tried for the murders again at a later date.
