(KWNO)-The Winona County Attorney’s Office is charging Adam Fravel with second-degree murder in the death of Madeline Kingsbury. County Attorney Karin Sonneman made the announcement on Friday. The medical examiner’s office ruled the manner of death was “homicidal violence.”

The criminal complaint outlines a history of abuse by Fravel. A friend of Kingbury says she observed Fravel hitting Kingsbury in the face while on a video call with her. Also in the complaint is a transcript of text messages between Fravel and Kingsbury. In one exchange Kingsbury wrote to Fravel, You know I’m not really okay with or over the fact that you put your hand around my neck and pushed me down in front of the kids earlier so don’t.”

Kingsbury’s body was found on Wednesday near Mabel and adjacent to property owned by relatives of Fravel. The body was wrapped in a sheet and concealed in a wooded area, according to law enforcement. Fravel was arrested on Wednesday evening. His bail was set at $2 million unconditional or $1 million conditional.

Phil Prokopowicz has been hired as a Special Assistant Winona County Attorney and will lead the prosecution team. Prokopowicz is retired from the Dakota County Attorney’s Office where he was the chief deputy in the criminal division.

Fravel will appear in court again on July 20. Sonneman said additional charges are possible. The child protection case involving Fravel remains open and active. The children Kingsbury and Fravel share will remain in the custody of Kingsbury’s family. If Fravel bails out he will be allowed to see the kids under supervision but when asked if that will be revoked, Sonneman said, “all options are on the table.”
