(KWNO)- Area teams concluded their regular seasons this past weekend as their focus now shifts to tournament play.
Section 1A:
Rushford-Peterson: 5-14
-RP Softball had a bumpy year but was still good enough to earn the fifth seed in the Section 1 Class A tournament. They’ll face off with the four seed in Goodhue, who finished the season at 6-12. First pitch slated for tonight, May 22, at 5:00 p.m. from Goodhue High School.
-RP and Goodhue had one scheduled game during the regular season but it was postponed due to weather. Both teams will be getting their first look at one another come later tonight. Winner of this matchup will faceoff with either #1 Southland or #8 Spring Grove, Southland is the clear favorite to advance.
Section 1AA:
Cotter: 14-3
-The Cotter Rambler Softball team had yet another stellar regular season, earning the #2 seed in the Section 1 Class AA tournament. A 14-3 record often times can earn the one seed, but this year, St. Charles topped the Ramblers for the first spot in the section. Cotter will face off with the seven seeded Bulldogs of Plainview-Elgin-Millville later tonight at 5:00 p.m.
-These two teams have met once before on the year, matching up back on April 14. It was all Cotter in the first go around as the Ramblers stomped the Bulldogs 7-0. Junior Pitcher Madison Hazelton threw a no-hitter in that game back in April and was one lone walk away from a perfect game. Winner of this Matchup will go on to face the winner of #3 Chatfield and #6 Caledonia, two teams that the Ramblers have beaten before.
Section 1AAA:
Winona Senior High: 17-2
-The Winhawk Softball team, fresh off of a state championship loss one year ago, didn’t miss a beat in the regular season. Winning 17 games and losing a mere two, they walzed to the first overall seed in the Section 1 Class AAA tournament. That one seed gets them a first-round bye, and they’ll await their opponent for Round 2 on Thursday night. The Winhawks will face either the #4 seed in Faribault or the #5 seed in Stewartville. WSHS has already beat Fairbult once this season but have yet to face Stewartville.
-The Winhawks are a Class AAA powerhouse, reaching the state tournament five times since 2016. The Winhawks were crowned champions in 2017 and have reached the state championship game the last two seasons but have come up just short both times. With many players from those two losses still on the roster, they’ll be hungry to finish job this time around.
