(KWNO)- The Winona Human Rights Commission is sponsoring an essay contest for all area students in grades 9-12.
The essay topic for this year will be “Juneteenth” and the purpose behind the contest is for students “to engage their critical thinking skills and for them to share their ideas, concerns and articulate the reality of discrimination and civil rights violations that have a negative impact in the United States and in other countries.” The Winona Human Rights Commission states.
Winners of the contest will receive cash prizes, with first place taking home $100, second place $50 and third place $25.
The essay is intended to be 1-3 pages long and judges will analyze essays and pick the winner according to a specific prompt.
Full rules and entry forms have already been sent to area teachers, but more information is available on the City of Winona’s website.
