Candidates File for Winona City Council, School Board Seats

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-The candidate filing window for this fall’s election closed on Tuesday.  

Three seats will be on the ballot this year for the Winona City Council. The Minnesota Secretary of State’s website indicates Councilwoman Michelle Alexander is being challenged for an at-Large seat by Jerome Christenson, Amber Buysman is challenging Fourth Ward Councilman George Borzykowski and Jeff Hyma is the lone candidate to file to represent the city’s Second Ward, a seat held by Eileen Moeller.  

Three seats are on the ballot for the Winona Area Public Schools Board this year. Five candidates have filed for the at-Large seat. Incumbent Nancy Denzer is being challenged by fellow board member Karl Sonneman along with Anthony Alwan, Maurella L. Cunningham and Torry Moore.  

Amanda Jonsgaard, Ted Hazelton and Pete Watkins have filed for the First District, a seat that will be vacated by board member Steve Schild at the end of his term. Incumbent Michael Hanratty is the lone candidate to file for the second district.  

The Primary Election is set for Aug. 9 with the general happening Nov. 8.
