WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Centers is set to expand its housing options.

Adult Community Based Services Director Christy Ferrington says the Winona-based mental healthcare provider plans to have units in the soon-to-be-open Waters Edge Apartments along Mankato Ave.

“We’ll have five apartments in there with mixed family units ranging from one-bedroom all the way up to three bedrooms,” Farrington told KWNO. “The hope is that leasing will begin sometime in August for that building.”

Adult Residential Director Megan Toney says housing is a crucial part of everyone’s overall health.

“Housing is an important social determinant of health. It’s one of the basic things that we need to be well no matter what our situation,” Toney said during an interview with KWNO. “Our clients especially benefit from having that safe, secure place to end their day and start it so it’s very fortunate we are able to have that in the Winona community.”

Hiawatha Valley has four group residential homes and a 20-unit apartment complex within the Winona community. Ferrington says the new units will help Hiawatha Valley meet the demand for supportive housing options within the community.

The Water’s Edge Apartments have 41 units.
