WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-Winona County Public Health is planning COVID-19 vaccine clinics this week.

The clinics follow Winona County slipping back into the high COVID risk category earlier this month.

“We are seeing an increase in the number of cases for COVID-19 and I do believe that’s due to the new variants that are present and that’s expected with any virus,” Winona County Public Health Supervisor Melanie Frazier told KWNO.

Frazier says hospitalizations have also ticked up. The county will hold a clinic Wednesday until 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Parkview Office building located at 855 Mankato Ave.

Fraizer says the recently approved Pfizer booster shot for those between the ages of 5 and 11 is among the doses health officials are offering at the clinics.

“It’s recommended that they get it at least five months after their primary series,” Frazier said. “The reason for that, just like we’ve seen with the other populations, the vaccine’s efficacy or effectiveness starts to wain after a while.”
