Lawmakers Approaching Deal on Tax Cuts

By TJ May 20, 2022 | 11:08 AM

ST. PAUL (KWNO)-Minnesota lawmakers are close to striking a deal on how to divvy up $4 billion in tax cuts.

That’s what Senate Majority Leader Jeremy Miller told a group of reporters Thursday. Miller told KWNO there’s bipartisan interest in reducing property tax burdens.

“Property taxes of course are determined at the local level but we’re looking at some different ways to see if we could also provide some property tax [relief] to the people of Minnesota,” Miller said.

Senate Republicans have also continued calls to repeal Minnesota’s tax on social security income. Democrats previously decried that proposal as a giveaway for the rich, but Rep. Gene Pelowski says lawmakers could find a way to exempt more Minnesotans from taxes on their social security benefits.

“I’m hopeful about social security. It may be not a full take-off of the social security tax but I think you’re going to see something significant come out on that end,” Pelowski said during an interview on KWNO’s In the Know Thursday.

Lawmakers have until midnight on May 23 to pass a bill before the session ends.
