WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-MnDOT is anticipating work on Mankato Ave. to start on Fri., May 20.

District Six Spokesman Mike Dougherty says motorists will notice new barricades being put in place on that Friday, with the construction work starting on May 23.

“We would probably see the construction work really starting on that west side, on the Dairy Queen, Winona Health side, of Mankato Ave. and kind of start working north from there,” Dougherty said.

Dougherty says the May 20 date is tentative and could change depending on the weather. He says crews will also start swapping out traffic signals along Mankato Ave. for temporary stoplights.

Crews have been building a temporary road to route traffic away from roundabout construction at the intersection of Highways 43 and 61 since the project began last month. Dougherty says the switch to the temporary road is expected to start next week.

MnDOT shared a list of other work that’s expected to start around May 20:

  • Access to East Lake Blvd near the corner of Hwy 43/61 will be closed around May 20, and there will be no through traffic on East Lake Blvd
  • Crews will build the roundabouts one half at a time.
  • Parks Ave, near Dairy Queen and Winona Health, will be the first intersection that is temporarily closed during construction. Detour maps will be posted closer to the time the work takes place. Motorists can also reach these destinations via Parks Ave off Hwy 61.
  • Crews will only close one side street at a time, leaving the remaining two streets open to allow access to destinations. As they complete one, they will open it and move on to the next.
  • No left turns will be allowed, but detour signs will show motorists how to turn right and cross Mankato Ave. Detour maps will be posted on the project website in the coming weeks and shared via email.
  • Temporary traffic signals will be installed throughout Mankato Ave/Hwy 43 when this work begins.
