Health Care Industry Examining Staffing Shortages

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-Workforce levels are top of mind for leaders in the healthcare industry.

That’s according to Winona Health President/CEO Rachelle Schultz. She says the number of people expected to come into the industry is expected to dwindle over the next 15-20 years.

“At a national level, and this plays out locally, there are 1.5 million positions that are open in healthcare. Half of those, 750,000 of those, are nursing assistants, certified nursing assistants,” Schultz told KWNO. “They’re really the backbone of our healthcare system.”

Schultz said the Winona Health leadership team is examining their care process, “We are still looking at how do we recruit and retain? How do we develop people differently? What is the work that has to be done?”

A report from the Minnesota Department of Health found one in five rural healthcare providers plan to leave their position in the next five years.
