National Weather Service Confirms First MN Tornados of 2022

(KWNO)-Severe thunderstorms weather southeast Minnesota and northern Iowa spawned at least five tornados Tuesday night.  

Storm survey teams from the National Weather Service in La Crosse confirmed an EF-2 tornado in Mower County and an EF-1 in Fillmore County. The EF-2 struck the small town of Taopi and left extensive damage to buildings, cars, trees, and powerlines in its wake.  

Two people were injured while they attempted to seek shelter. The weather service estimates the twister reached a peak wind speed of 130 mph.  

No injuries were reported from the Fillmore County tornado. The weather service says the twister damaged farm buildings near Spring Valley and had an estimated peak wind speed of 100 mph.  

No injuries were reported from three confirmed cyclones in Iowa.

The National Weather Service reported a radar-confirmed tornado in Winona County Tuesday night but that has yet to be confirmed by survey teams.
