(KWNO)-A project to resurface 27 miles of Hwy. 61 in Winona and Wabasha Counties begins Monday.
Crews will resurface the southbound lanes of 61 from Wabasha to Minnesota City, improve seven bridges in that span, make enhancements in Weaver and install a reduced-conflict intersection at Highways 42 and 61. Traffic in both directions will be reduced to single lanes in the work zone, some stretches of single-lane traffic will be up to 14 miles long.
When the reduced conflict intersection is installed at the Hwy. 61 and Hwy. 42 intersection, the following traffic impacts will occur:
-
- Hwy. 61 traffic will not be detoured but will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
- Traffic on Hwy 61. wanting to access Hwy 42 will go west on County Road 18 then south on County Road 4 to get onto Hwy 42.
- Hwy. 42 traffic will go north on County Road 4 then east on County Road 18 to travel on Hwy 61.
- Signs will be in place to direct motorists to Hwy. 42 businesses, such as SVJ Creative Designs and Cowpokes Western Shop.
Parts of the Mississippi River bike trail will also be closed during the work. Signs will be in place to encourage bikers and motorists to share the road. The project is scheduled to wrap up in October.
