WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-Winona City Councilman Steve Young and fellow resident Dwayne Voegeli are inviting the community to put aside political differences and show support for Ukraine.

The event “Rally for Ukraine and Democracy” is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lake Park Bandshell. Young said community leaders will be on hand and attendees will hear a speech from a Ukraine native who now calls Winona home.

Young also said there will be a fundraising aspect to the event, involving Winona’s sister city in Poland.

“We are going to collect money and we’re going to forward that,” Young said. “We understand that there are Ukrainians being supported and hosted in Bytow, Poland.”

Young says money raised will go to support Ukrainian refugees who fled to Winona’s Polish sister city. There’s also a photo planned that Young says will send a strong message.

“These photographs are widely distributed in Ukraine,” Young said referring to photos from other rallies showing support for Ukraine held around the U.S. “If you think of what this could mean to a person, that hey even in small-town America they know who we are, they support us, they know what’s going on.”
