ST. PAUL, Minn. (KWNO)-The Minnesota House Thursday voted 126-0 to pass a bill that would require the state to divest its holdings in Russian and Belarusian entities.
“It’s a symbolic gesture,” Winona DFL Rep. Gene Pelowski said. I think the total amount was somewhere around $50 million that we’re looking at in investments, which in the scope of countries isn’t really very much.”
The bill also prevents state agencies from working with Russian companies, which matches an executive order rolled out by Gov. Tim Walz. The bill heads to the Senate where it will be voted on next week, says Majority Leader Sen. Jeremy Miller.
“I do believe it’s a way to show support for Ukraine during this incredibly difficult and challenging time for them and a way to show the folks of Russia that we do not agree with what they’re doing,” said Miller.
