WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-The risk posed by COVID-19 in Winona County and throughout the state of Minnesota continues to decline.
The latest update of the CDC’s Community Levels by County Map shows 85 of Minnesota’s 87 counties are considered low risk. Three northern Minnesota counties are classified as experiencing medium risk.
Winona Health President and CEO Rachelle Schultz told KWNO there’s been a sense of calm around the hospital during the COVID risk decline.
“We still have people that will be in the hospital and test for COVID but mostly right now what we’re seeing is they’re coming in for other medical or surgical reasons. We still test everybody and may find out they have COVID so the severity of what they’re experiencing with that has gone down quite a bit,” Schultz said during an interview on KWNO’s In the Know earlier this week.
Schultz said Winona Health recently had a nine-day stretch where no patients were hospitalized for COVID. Schultz says she feels better about the organization and community in the face of the pandemic.
Across the river, all but two Wisconsin counties, located in the northwest part of the state, are considered low risk.
