WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-Minnesota House Democrats are at odds over whether or not to replenish the state’s unemployment fund before March 15.
Winona DFL Rep. Gene Pelowski is sponsoring a bill that would replenish the fund with $2.7 billion.
“We should refill the account and we should do it by March 15 but it’s very unlikely now the House will,” Pelowski said on KWNO’s In the Know Thursday.
DEED Commissioner Steve Grove testified to lawmakers that businesses across the state will be taxed if the fund isn’t made solvent by March 15. House leaders say businesses aren’t concerned about the tax.
Pelowski disagrees.
“We have businesses that are extremely concerned about this and in this post-pandemic economy we certainly don’t need any more stresses than we’ve had for the last two years,” Pelowski said. “It’s a huge disagreement in approach here.”
Pelowski believes his bill would pass the House with bipartisan support if it were to come up for a vote.
