Push Continues to End Tax on Social Security Income

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KWNO)-Republicans in the Minnesota Senate are continuing their push to end state income taxes on social security benefits.

It’s included in the record-setting tax cut Republicans proposed last month. Senate Majority Leader Jeremy Miller says he has heard the calls to end it from his constituents.

“It is time for the state of Minnesota to fully exempt social security income from state income taxes. No more taxes on social security income,” Miller said during an interview on KWNO’s In the Know last week.

DFL leaders say ending social security income taxes will only benefit rich Minnesotans and remain opposed to the measure. Winona DFL Rep. Gene Pelowski sees the issue differently.

“I think this is the perfect time to do it,” Pelowski told KWNO last week. “We’ve never seen this kind of revenue available. We’re one of the few states that still has it. We know we’ve got a growing population of senior citizens.”

Minnesota is one of 12 states that tax some or all of their resident’s social security income, according to AARP.
