Sen. Miller, Rep. Pelowski React to New District Maps

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KWNO)-A five-judge panel released new legislative voting maps to reflect 2020 census results last week.

The senate district represented by Sen. Jeremy Miller now includes the communities of Goodview, Minnesota City, and Rollingstone as well as some areas of eastern Mower County. Miller said there was some disappointment among Republican lawmakers who were paired into the same new district.

“Our region didn’t change all that much. Some others did but all and all I think it was a very fair process,” Miller said during an interview on KWNO’s In the Know last week.

Rep. Gene Pelowski, who also has new constituents in Minnesota City, Goodview, and Rollingstone, discussed the new district maps with KWNO.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had this number of pairings where you have two representatives, two senators in a legislative district or you even have a number of open districts that were created where, at least for now, there is no senator or representative in that district,” Pelowski said.

Pelowski said he heard from a number of lawmakers who were considering a move to an open seat once the maps were released. State law requires senators and house members to live in the districts they represent.

Minnesota’s first congressional district gained Wabasha and Goodhue Counties following the redistricting process. Those counties will not be included in a special election to fill the House Seat of Rep. Jim Hagedorn, who passed away after a battle against Kidney cancer last week.
