WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-A 17-year-old St. Paul murder suspect was arrested in Winona Monday afternoon.

Ramsey County Court documents identify the subject as Mekhi Camden Speed of Minneapolis.

Winona Police say they were alerted by the St. Paul Police Department that the Speed was believed to be in the Winona area. Police say an officer observed Speed as a passenger in a vehicle that entered a service station on the 1600 block of Service Dr.

Officers say Speed fled officers on foot after they removed him from the vehicle. They were able to apprehend him near the area of first contact.

Speed was in possession of a loaded semi-automatic pistol, according to the police report. He was taken into custody by members of the St. Paul Police Department.

Winona Police say Speed faces possible local charges relating to the possession of the firearm.

Speed is a suspect in a St. Paul murder that occurred on Jan. 10, according to court documents. As part of the murder investigation, Minneapolis Police executed a no-knock search warrant at an apartment complex on Feb. 2 that led to the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Amir Locke, who the petition identifies as Speed’s cousin.

Assisting the Winona Police Department were members of the Winona County Sheriff’s Office, Houston County Sheriff’s Office, Goodview Police Department, and the Southeast MN Violent Crimes Enforcement Team.
