Winona County Continues Seeing High Demand for Homes

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-High demand and low inventory led to a continued increase in home prices in Winona County last year.

“We had record numbers of sales and those sales, because of the demand and not enough properties to cover all of the parties that were looking, pushed the prices up,” Winona County Recorder Bob Bambenek said during an interview on KWNO’s In the Know Monday.

Bambenek’s office reported 764 home sales in 2021, up from 725 in 2020. 57% of last year’s home sales occurred within the City of Winona, up from 51% in 2020.

Record low-interest rates were also part of the story last year at 2% according to Bambenek. He said the price category that saw the most home sales shifted last year.

“In 2021 it moved up to $150,000 to $200,000 and most of the homes that sold in that range were probably in the $160,000 to $175,000,” Bambenek said. “That’s the first time that we’ve been in that range with the large number of sales.”

Bambenek said there were 198 homes sold in that price range. The most expensive home sold in 2021 came in at $899,000 and 80% of homes sold in the final quarter of 2021 were priced above county market value.
