(KWNO)-Minnesota’s 2022 legislative session begins on Monday.

Winona DFL Rep. Gene Pelowski shared two items he plans to address during an interview on KWNO’s In the Know Thursday.

“The first hearings in my committee which will start Feb. 3 will be primarily on broadband and then making sure the disaster account is solvent and prepared,” Pelowski said.

Pelowski also called on lawmakers to finish bonus payments for frontline COVID workers and to repay the federal unemployment fund to avoid passing the costs onto businesses. He says lawmakers need to accomplish those items in the early days of the 14-week session.

Pelowski chairs the Subcommittee on Legislative Process Reform and sits on the House Ways and Means Committee. He wants the legislature to simplify the lawmaking process.

“I’ve had the discussion with the [Speaker of the House] on passing individual bills. Not omnibus bills which we have no idea what’s in them. Not 1,300-page bills but individual bills that members can work on” said Pelowski.

Some of the other tasks at hand for lawmakers are drafting and passing a bill to fund public works projects, addressing a rise in violent crime and determining how to use the state’s $7.7 billion budget surplus.
