(KWNO)-The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department is imploring eager fishermen to stay off the ice
In a social media post, the department said they received reports of two people falling through the ice near Alma on Monday. They advise residents to stay off the ice until there’s a prolonged stretch of cold weather.
“The general rule obviously is no ice is ever 100% safe,” Winona County Emergency Management Director Ben Klinger said. “Usual what they say the minimum for walking on is four inches, snowmobiles, ATV’s, 5-7 inches, car 8-12 [inches] and larger vehicles 12-15 inches.”
Ice thickness around the area may take a significant blow with high temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday well above freezing. The good news for anglers is a stretch of high temperatures below the freezing is predicted to begin on Saturday.
