(KWNO)-The Winona County Sheriff’s Office will join several of their southeast Minnesota counterparts for a saturation campaign from 4-7 p.m. on Friday.

It’s part of what’s being the called the “Dying to Get Home” campaign. Officials say the time of day selected is when traffic volumes are high and when a disproportional amount of fatal and serious injury crashes occur.

Authorities say the goal of the effort is to keep Minnesotans safe on the road and to stop dangerous driving habits. The campaign comes ahead of one of the busiest travel weekends of the year and on the heels of the state reaching 300 traffic fatalities before September, which hasn’t happened since 2007.

“Whether you plan to celebrate Labor Day weekend at the lake, at the cabin, or in the backyard, we want everyone to make it home safely. Traffic crashes and the resulting fatalities and injuries are preventable,” says Winona County Sheriff Ron Ganrude. “Speeding is a significant problem statewide. Enforcing that law and all traffic laws for the primary contributors to traffic fatalities, including impaired driving, no seat belts and distraction, is critical to saving lives.”
