WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-City of Winona leaders are trying to get out ahead of the electronic scooter sensation that’s sweeping Minnesota.
The Winona City Council will take up discussion of a draft ordinance for motorized foot scooters, micro-mobility, and shared transportation systems Monday night. City Manager Steve Sarvi told KWNO the city is trying to be proactive to avoid having motorized scooters and other shared forms of shared transportation in town before clear rules are in place.
Assistant City Planner Luke Sims said electronic scooter company Bird Rides has expressed interest in operating in Winona. Sims said the company is offering guidance on crafting an ordinance for use of their scooters and supports the city’s decision to establish regulations before allowing the scooter company to operate.
Sims says once council members share their input, city staff will make recommended changes and present a formal ordinance for a vote at a later date.
