MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (KWNO)- Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison for the murder of George Floyd on Friday.
Judge Pete Cahill said the sentence was not based on emotion, public opinion, and sympathy.
Chauvin was convicted for second and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in April. The maximum penalty is 40 years of prison time.
The state asked Judge Pete Cahill for an upward departure from state sentencing guidelines, while Chauvin’s defense asked for probation plus time already served.
Prior to the sentencing, Floyd’s daughter Gianna, brothers Terrence and Philonise, nephew Brandon Williams, all read victim impact statements. Chauvin’s mother, Carolyn Pawlenty, spoke on his behalf.
Chauvin also spoke at the hearing. He extended his condolences to the Floyd family and said there will be new information coming to light in the future that he hopes will give the Floyd family peace of mind.
Earlier Friday, Judge Cahill denied the Chauvin defense team’s motion for a new trial.
