Lake Park Drive Speed Limit Reduction on Winona City Council Agenda

WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-The Winona City Council is set to take up a resolution that would reduce the speed limit on Lake Park Drive from 30 mph to 20 mph.

The meeting agenda item includes data from a speed study conducted on Lake Park Dr. at three points: just west of Washington Street, near the bandshell, and near the Jaycee Shelter to the east of Franklin Street. the 85th percentile of the speed in these areas was 31.6 mph at Washington Street, 26.6 mph at the bandshell, and 28.5 mph at the Jaycee Shelter.

The study also found an average of 71 vehicles per day going over 35 mph in the Washington Street area, multiple vehicles traveling over 50 mph, and two vehicles going over 65 mph. City Manager Steve Sarvi says it’s difficult for law enforcement to catch speeders in the area.

“In the past, we haven’t had much success catching speeders. The reduction in the speed limit in that area of course always falls back on enforcement,” Sarvi told councilmembers during a meeting in May.
