ST. PAUL, Minn. (KWNO)-Implementing an off-ramp for Minnesota’s eviction moratorium is one of the many issues lawmakers will tackle when they convene for a special session next week.
The moratorium was put in place last March to prevent mass evictions during COVID shutdowns.
“There are some renters who did not have the ability or who are unable to pay rent,” said Sen. Jeremy Miller R-Winona. “But there also are several renters who did have the ability to pay rent and simply did not do that. I’ve had several stories from landlords tell me that they’ve had people say I have the money but I’m not going to pay because the governor said I don’t have to.”
Rep. Gene Pelowski says he hopes the issue gets resolved, especially in areas where there are a lot of rental properties, such as Winona. Pelowski said lawmakers are continuing to haggle over the language of the legislation that would end the moratorium.
“There’s no resolution as of today,” Pelowski told KWNO Thursday. “There won’t be a bill introduced on Monday. I’m hopeful that we’ll have a resolution by the end of the month.”
Assistance is available for renters who have fallen behind on their payments through Rent Help MN.
