WINONA, Minn. (KWNO)-For many, the Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start of summer and time out on the water.
The holiday weekend also coincides with National Safe Boating Week. Chris Warrington of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary advises boaters to know the governing laws of their body of water, boat sober, watch for changing weather conditions, and to wear a life jacket.
“Remember to wear your life jacket. It won’t do you any good if you don’t put it on,” said Warrington. “Accidents on the water can happen way too fast for you to reach and put on a stowed life jacket. So, when you go out on the water whether you’re canoeing, kayaking, boating or sailing just make sure you have that life jacket on.”
Warrington also encourages boaters who haven’t, to take a boater safety course. The Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Natural Resources offer online forms of the class.
