LA CRESCENT, Minn. (KWNO)-A team of state and federal wildlife officials rounded up 34 invasive carp from Pool 8 of the Mississippi River earlier this month.
La Crosse District Manager of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge Tim Miller said like other invasive species, “invasive fish displace native fish, they outcompete them for resources. A lot of time they can reproduce quickly and just by sheer numbers cut down on resources native fish use.
Miller said the area saw an influx of invasive carp after the spring of 2019 when high water allowed them to surpass locks downriver. He said the netting operation came to fruition after officials received multiple reports of commercial fishermen catching the carp.
He said officials are planning for a similar catching operation later this year.
