(KWNO)- The Winona Senior High School will voluntarily switch to distance learning following their spring break in early March.

“This a proactive measure. We realize it’s a little bit disruptive but that is why we wanted to announce it now, more than a month before spring break starts to give our staff and our families time to prepare,” said Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) Communications Coordinator John Casper.

Casper says the goal of the switch is to preserve in-person learning days and to prevent students from bringing the virus back to school with them from their spring break destinations. Casper said local health officials are particularly concerned about the virus spreading among high-school-aged students.

“On March 25 hybrid learning will resume at the high school and if the levels continue to go down we really hope that we can be in person at the high school at some point this year,” Casper said.

All other schools will remain in their pre-spring break models following the break. WAPS spring break is scheduled from March 8-12. Casper also said the district hasn’t ruled out hosting commencement at Paul Giel Field this year, but acknowledged it’s far off and said WAPS will follow health guidelines when they are announced.
